THE SPARROW
Maria Scuderi
Raised from age twelve behind the walls of Santa Chiara, Maria knows the world only through a lattice grille. When cholera sends her home, she meets it like a newborn adult. Falling for Nino is a total awakening, but she has internalised the convent so completely that she cannot recognise her own desires as legitimate. Her final choice is the first that is truly hers alone.
